An open letter ~
To: Anyone whose roots or interests are in historic Methodism in its purist Biblical and Wesleyan/Arminian form.
John Wesley was the son of an Anglican priest, had been raised in church, and himself a clergyman. Yet, his heart was not "strangely warmed" until a month before his 35th. birthday. Within a few months, he was boldly preaching free salvation in church after church. His message so frightened and embarrassed the clergy and church members where he preached it, many refused to allow him to preach there again. Other churches were closed to him as word spread from priest to priest. Before a full year had passed, John had joined his brother Charles and George Whitfield to preach in the Bristol area of England. All three of them were forbidden to preach free and complete salvation by grace through faith from the pulpits of the Church of England, so they preached it out in the open fields. Within a few years, their powerful gospel preaching had brought about the great Methodist revival that turned England upside down and spread to America.
Today, I have a simple question for the spiritually honest among you to consider: Could the Wesley's preach their bold message today in the majority of churches or would many of those pulpits, too, be closed to them?
Why have I written this bold, open letter to you? Perhaps you are not interested in the Methodism of the Wesley's; perhaps you actually prefer the ecclesiastical hierarchy that cares more for works righteousness and liberal politics than it does for the gospel message the Wesley's preached. If so, that is fine. However, if you wish there were a church where the message of the Weslsy's can still be heard, bold and without compromise, I'm happy to inform you there is. It is called the "Evangelical Methodist Church," and to learn more about it I invite you to contact me at the following addresses.
Yours in the Christ Whom the Wesley's Preached.
