THANKSGIVING

1. Gratitude directed towards God (except Luke 17:9; Acts 24:3; Rom. 16:4), generally in response to God’s concrete acts in history. Thanksgiving was central to Old Testament worship. Sacrifice and offerings were to be made not grudgingly but with thanksgiving (Ps. 54:6; Jonah 2:9).

The psalmist valued a song of thanksgiving more than sacrifice (Ps. 69:30-31).

David employed Levites “to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord” (1 Chron. 16:4; also 23:30; Neh. 12:46).

Pilgrimage to the Temple and Temple worship were characterized by thanksgiving (Pss. 42:4; 95:2; 100:4; 122:4).

Thankfulness was expressed: for personal(Ps. 35:18)

and national deliverance (Ps. 44:7-8)

(Psa 44:7 NIV) but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

(Psa 44:8 NIV) In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

for God’s faithfulness to the covenant (Ps. 100:5);

and for forgiveness (Ps. 30:4-5; Isa. 12:1).

(Psa 30:4 NIV) Sing to the LORD, you saints of his; praise his holy name.

(Psa 30:5 NIV) For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

All creation joins in offering thanks to God (Ps. 145:10). See Psalms.

Thanksgiving is a natural element of Christian worship (1 Cor. 14:16-17)

and is to characterize all of Christian life (Col. 2:7; 4:2).

(Col 2:7 NIV) rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

(Col 4:2 NIV) Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Early Christians expressed thanks: for Christ’s healing ministry (Luke 17:16);

for Christ’s deliverance of the believer from sin (Rom. 6:17-18; 7:25);

for God’s indescribable gift of grace in Christ (2 Cor. 9:14-15; 1 Cor. 15:57; compare Rom. 1:21);

and for the faith of fellow Christians (Rom. 1:8).

(Rom 1:8 NIV) First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world.

2. Epistolary thanksgiving: An element in the opening of a typical Greek letter. All of the Pauline Letters with the exception of Galatians begin with a thanksgiving. See Letters.

(Lev 7:13 NIV) Along with his fellowship offering of thanksgiving he is to present an offering with cakes of bread made with yeast.

(Lev 7:15 NIV) The meat of his fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; he must leave none of it till morning.

(Ezra 3:11 NIV) With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: "He is good; his love to Israel endures forever." And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.

(Neh 11:17 NIV) Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, the director who led in thanksgiving and prayer; Bakbukiah, second among his associates; and Abda son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.

(Neh 12:8 NIV) The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and also Mattaniah, who, together with his associates, was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving.

(Neh 12:24 NIV) And the leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of Kadmiel, and their associates, who stood opposite them to give praise and thanksgiving, one section responding to the other, as prescribed by David the man of God.

(Neh 12:27 NIV) At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres.

(Neh 12:46 NIV) For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the singers and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

(Psa 42:4 NIV) These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

(Psa 69:30 NIV) I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.

(Psa 95:2 NIV) Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.

(Psa 100:4 NIV) Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

(Psa 147:7 NIV) Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp.

(Isa 51:3 NIV) The LORD will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

(Jer 30:19 NIV) From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained.

(Jonah 2:9 NIV) But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."

(1 Cor 10:16 NIV) Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

(1 Cor 14:16 NIV) If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?

(2 Cor 4:15 NIV) All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

(2 Cor 9:11 NIV) You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

(Eph 5:4 NIV) Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

(Phil 4:6 NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

(1 Tim 2:1 NIV) I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--

(1 Tim 4:3 NIV) They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.

(1 Tim 4:4 NIV) For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
